Manorexia: How anorexia and bodybuilding helped me navigate locker-rooms, gyms, jails and other male spaces
April 16, 2026
5:00PM-6:30PM
The Rifkind Center (NAC 6/316 )
Harold A. Veeser, CCNY English Professor and 2025-6 Rifkind Fellow will read and discuss his book in progress, a memoir of male anorexia confessions. While current hospital records show that more males than ever are presenting with eating disorders, few male anorexic memoirs have appeared. In MANOREXIA, Prof. Veeser seeks to correct this record, offering a first-hand account of his sixty-year long pursuit of thinness and muscularity.
H. Aram Veeser teaches at the City College of New York, as well as at the CUNY Graduate Center in the Biography and Memoir (BAM) program and the MEMEAC program. He has written for the Nation and Zmagazines. He is also the author of Edward Said: The Charisma of Criticism (Routledge) and the editor of numerous books, including The New Historicism and Confessions of the Critics.
