Michael Gillespie, Associate Professor of Film, Department of Media and Communication Arts and the Black Studies Program at City College

Thursday April 27th, 2017
12:30 – 2:00 PM
Rifkind Room NAC 6/316

This talk focuses on two recent films that demonstrate a rich and necessary complication of the idea of black film.  Anna Rose Holmer’s “The Fits (2015)” and Frances Bodomo’s “Everybody Dies! (2016)” collectively compel radical and innovative enactments of narrative, aesthetics, and historiography.  The talk will consider the stakes of each film in the terms of film blackness, a critical measure of cinema’s place in black visual and expressive culture.
